HELP ME, PLEASE!

I need ideas. The new year is fast approaching and I need some help. Those who have known me for a long time are aware that each year I give up one type of food (just for the year; I start eating it again the next year). This tradition started when I was in high school and all my Catholic friends were giving something up for Lent. I decided to join in and gave up chocolate, and then I decided to just keep going until the end of the year. Thus the tradition was born. I love doing it because it reminds me that I have self-control.

I've been doing this for so many years that I'm running out of ideas though. So far, I've given up: chocolate, soda, candy, chips, ice cream, peanuts, donuts, cookies, yeast breads with 100% white flour (I was really running out of ideas!), M&M's... Can't remember every single one, but that's most of them.

So I need some ideas. It has to be something that is unhealthy and also a food that I would miss (i.e. I'd have a hard time giving it up). So not something like pork rinds since I don't like pork. Also, it can't be overly inconvenient to give it up--like sugar--I'd never be able to eat anything made outside my house...

Anyway, help me out, people!

How about crackers, processed cheese (cheese wiz, cream cheese) Fruit flavored candy, sugar cereal, instant oatmeal, hamburgers, kool aid type drinks, there are still a lot of options. I still remember when you did this. I thought that it was soooo cool!

Is it important to you to give up each unhealthy food only once? Why don't you just cycle back through the ones you gave up before? They're still unhealthy and you still like them, right?

how about cake or pie. that's a really tough one considering that Maggie is in your familia...but if I can't have her cooking, then you should suffer too!:)

My mother-in-law suggested high fructose corn syrup, but I think that would fall under the "too inconvenient" category! I like Nathan's suggestion!

Let us all vow together, right now, to stop eating Crisco from the can.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of changing foods. I am still stuck on giving up chocolate. It will be two years in March. People ask why I don't eat chocolate and I don't have a great answer. I like chocolate okay. I am not allergic to it. I eat plenty of other junk, so I can't say it is a health thing. But I like what you said about it reminds you that you have self-control. It is nice to know that there is something I can say no to and in an odd way it makes me feel good to say no about something.

How about brownies....or does that fall under the "too inconvenient" category??? :)

A number of my students, due to gut issues are on restricted diets. I often wonder how their parents are able to find recipes and restaurant food that comply with the diets. It's really interesting. Anyway, if you are feeling really adventurous this year, try a GFCF diet (gluten-free, casein-free), OR try living life this year as if you have celiac's disease (really can't have wheat flour of any kind). It will put a twist on your annual resolution, adding the compassion part as you learn to adapt to life by choice in a way that others learn to adapt by necessity. :)

Ok, so, we have entered the new year and you have to have chosen by now. I must have no life at all but I can not wait to find out what you have done.

I don't know if you've picked something yet or if this is something you even use much but how about no extra salt sprinkled on anything. It's one that your blood vessels will thank you for as they'll have a year of scratch free, added scar tissue free joy!

Let us know what you pick!

Good luck! I like the salt idea.

ned and i often contmplate trying a vegetarian diet...not sure how you feel about giving up meat, but going without red meat might be an option. it would be hard for my kids but maybe not so for myself and ned. i also like the salt idea. i often pass up fried foods. i gave up soda pop a long time ago, but i am betting you don't drink soda, as I recall you are an h2o freakoid. anyways, i also am anxious to hear what you chose..let us know!!!

First, T, I'd like to tell you that I think you are so great. :) I just love ya for so often thinking (and doing!) outside the box. Hope you had an awesome Christmas!
That said, I'm sure you've solved your food restriction question, but I would just go crazy without cheese. Since it's actually pretty healthy, maybe set a limit. I prolly should. But oh well. I love my cheese! ;)
