Happy Birthday to Me!!

This year, to celebrate my birthday, I decided to run a half-marathon. D actually gave me the idea a few months ago when I was lamenting the fact that we couldn't afford the money and he couldn't afford the time (somebody has to watch the Squeak) to travel up to the St. George Half-Marathon in January. He said I should just do my own race. So I did, and I decided that my birthday was the perfect occasion. A few friends, including my sweet seester, did it with me. And Squeak did the WHOLE THING too! (in the jogger stroller, of course). What a way to celebrate!

CONGRATULATIONS!! What a great idea and good for you--I love the picture of Squeak--it looks like she's stretching pretty effectively!

Awesome!! Since I am new to running... I am amazed you run in Arizona. How do you do it with the heat and the dryness? Is it similar to Utah? We are at a lower elevation here, but it still is a dry climate and it is hard to breathe sometimes. I am running 2 1/2 miles a day, which by your standards is lame probably but I am excited. I am working up to 3 right now. My goal is 5,but that may take awhile. I am a slow runner. Also, I need to buy some new running shoes soon and was wondering what kind you like and don't like? Also, how do you push yourself when you get exhausted? What motivates you to keep going? Any runner tips for a newbie you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I was on vacation so I haven't monitored my blog much lately. I just saw your post today. Good job for starting a running habit in the wintertime--that's really tough because your lungs aren't used to it (which is why it's hard to breathe). You'll notice that it's much easier next winter after you've been running for awhile. Hey, and 2 1/2 miles ain't too shabby--I go on "lame" 3 mile runs all the time and I'm slow too. I used to do speedwork before La Squeak but haven't gotten back into it yet. I just feel weird sprinting with a jogger stroller!

I stay motivated to run by doing races--that's why I did the half-marathon. I was in a running rut and needed a little something to get me excited about running again. So sign up for a race--try a 5K in June and a 10K at the end of the summer. You'll be hooked.

Get some good shoes. The brand and type depend on your foot. I have a narrow heel and wide toes and I'm a "neutral" runner (that means I neither pronate nor supinate) and my favorite shoes are Nike Air Pegasus and Adidas Supernova Cushion. Go to a good running store, not Foot Locker or Big 5 Sports where they don't know what they're talking about. There's a place in Orem that's excellent, Runner's Corner, and another place in Salt Lake. I'm not sure about up in your neck of the woods. Anyway, these people will be able to look at your current running shoes and at your gait and assess which type of shoe would be best for you. It's very important to get a shoe that's right for your foot, not just the shoe that's on sale. I got a lot of info on this when I first got into long-distance running from Road Runner Sports (they sell shoes, clothes, and other running gear)--check them out online.

Also, almost as important as shoes, get a good sportsbra!! It will make such a difference. And get clothes that are meant for running, like Coolmax or Duofold (or any synthetic, moisture-wicking fabric) shirts, shorts and socks. Those things really help me keep running in less than ideal weather.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. As you probably noticed, I can talk your ear off about what I've learned.
